The day unfolds in a few distinct moments:

First stop

The Neapolis Archaeological Park: the Greek Theatre, one of the largest surviving from classical antiquity and still used for performances, the Ear of Dionysius - a limestone cave famous for its acoustics, said to have caught Caravaggio's attention - the Roman Amphitheatre, partly carved into the rock, and the plant-covered Latomie del Paradiso quarries.

Second stop

Ortigia, Syracuse's island-bound historic centre: the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, Sicily's oldest Doric temple dating to the 6th century BC, Piazza Duomo and its cathedral built around the Temple of Athena (its ancient Greek columns are still visible), and the Fountain of Arethusa, a freshwater spring lined with papyrus plants.

Third stop

Free time to explore at your own pace - stroll along the seafront, browse the market, admire the Baroque palaces, and stop for lunch at a trattoria or seafood restaurant. A Sicilian granita is well worth trying before heading back.
